The Ides of April By Lindsey Davis A new Marcus Didius Falco novel by Lindsey Davis. Quick, grab it off the library shelf.

But what’s this. The subtitle: A Flavia Albia. Such were my emotions on discovering this novel. A faithful fan of the wisecracking Falco, detective of ancient Rome, through twenty other novels (although I’ve evidently missed the last, Nemesis), I was /5.

This is especially true in books written for children and young adults where the nastiness (by our modern standards) of the ancient world are often overlooked and underplayed. Mary Ray's "The Ides of April" does a fairly good job of looking at the concerns of citizens, young people, and slaves in mid-first century Rome/5(13).

The Ides of April, by Mary Ray, is a very suspenseful and exiting book based on Roman history. In this book there is a smart, young, witty slave named Hylas who is able to escape from his master’s house after an unknown man murders his master.

At first I was sad that my beloved Falco was not the main character, but quickly fell for the feisty Flavia Albia. This story was as always wonderfully written, and hard to put down/5(16). The Ides of April is the only story with the added dimension of the classic murder mystery.

In all of the books the reader is drawn into the interesting, intertwined relationships as much as the historical period.

Miss Ray writes, “Like everyone who is officially retired I now feel busier than I ever was before.4/5(1). The Ides of April is vintage Lindsey Davis, offering wit, intrigue, Davis (Nemesis) ingeniously breathes life into her Ancient Rome series, which has reached 20 books, by shifting the focus from Marcus Didius Falco to his adopted daughter, Flavia Albia, who follows in her father's footsteps by becoming an investigator.
